Components of an Injection Mold: 26 Essential Parts and Their Functions

An injection mold is a complex system that involves numerous components in its manufacturing process. Based on years of experience in the injection molding industry, here are 26 essential parts of an injection mold and their brief descriptions:

  1. Cavity: The concave part that forms the surface of the plastic part.
  2. Cavity Plate: A plate-like component with a concave contour on its surface that matches the shape of the plastic part. When located in the fixed mold half, it's called a fixed cavity plate; when in the moving mold half, it's called a moving cavity plate.
  3. Core: The convex part that forms the inner surface of the plastic part.
  4. Side Core: A component that forms side holes, recesses, or protrusions on the plastic part, which can be manually or mechanically ejected and reset within the mold.
  5. Insert: A locally manufactured forming part that is separate from the main body and embedded into it, used for areas of the cavity or core that are prone to damage or difficult to machine as a whole.
  6. Movable Insert: A forming part that must move out of the mold with the plastic part according to process and structural requirements and can only be separated from the plastic part outside the mold.
  7. Split Block: Several separately manufactured forming parts that are assembled to form a cavity or core, referred to as cavity split blocks or core split blocks respectively.
  8. Threaded Core: A component that forms the internal threads of the plastic part, which can be a movable threaded core (ejected out of the mold) or a threaded core that rotates within the mold.
  9. Threaded Ring: A component that forms the external threads of the plastic part, which can be a movable threaded ring (whole or split) or a threaded ring that rotates within the mold.
  10. Guide Pin: A cylindrical component that mates with a guide bushing (or hole) installed in the other half of the mold to ensure precise guidance during the mold opening and closing movements. There are two types: headed guide pins and shouldered guide pins.
  11. Ejector Plate Guide Pin: A cylindrical component that slides within an ejector plate guide bushing (or hole) for guiding the ejection mechanism's movement.
  12. Guide Bushing: A round sleeve-like component that mates with a guide pin installed in the other half of the mold to ensure the relative position of the moving and fixed molds and precise guidance during mold opening and closing movements. There are two types: straight guide bushings and headed guide bushings.
  13. Ejector Pin: A rod that directly ejects the plastic part or the solidified material in the gating system. There are various types, such as cylindrical-headed ejector pins, shouldered ejector pins, and flat-headed ejector pins. Cylindrical-headed ejector pins can also be used to push the ejector plate, also known as a preload pin.
  14. Ejector Sleeve: A tubular component that directly ejects the plastic part.
  15. Ejector Plate: A plate-like component that directly ejects the plastic part.
  16. Ejector Ring: A ring- or disk-shaped component that partially or fully ejects the plastic part.
  17. Ejector Pin Fixed Plate: A plate-like component that fixes the ejection and return components, as well as the ejector plate guide bushings.
  18. Ejector Plate: A plate that supports the ejection and return components and directly transmits the ejection force from the machine.
  19. Connecting Ejector Pin: A rod that connects the ejector plate to the ejector pin fixed plate and transmits the ejection force.
  20. Puller Pin: A component located directly opposite the main runner with a special head shape that can pull out the solidified material in the main runner. The head shapes include Z-shaped, ball-headed, inverted conical, mushroom-shaped, and conical-headed.
  21. Runner Ejector Plate: A plate that ejects the solidified material in the gating system as the mold opens. Also known as a runner stripper plate.
  22. Ejector Plate Guide Bushing: A round sleeve-like component fixed to the ejector plate that slides with the ejector plate guide pin for guiding the ejection mechanism's movement.
  23. Gate Bushing: A sleeve component that directly contacts the injection machine's nozzle and has a channel for the main runner.
  24. Gate Insert: A replaceable wear-resistant metal insert used to improve the lifespan of the gate.
  25. Runner Plate: A plate specifically designed to create branch runners, which can be classified as hot runner plates or warm runner plates.
  26. Secondary Nozzle: A nozzle that provides a feed channel to the cavity directly or indirectly from the hot runner plate (or column).
