Exploration of Medical-Grade PEEK and PES Plastics: Properties, Applications, and High-Temperature Injection Molding Processes

In the field of medical implant materials, titanium and cobalt-chromium alloys have long held a dominant position. However, their high costs have limited their widespread application. In recent years, PEEK materials have increasingly been adopted in the implant field due to their outstanding biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and more affordable pricing. It is important to note that there are significant differences between implant-grade, medical-grade, and general-purpose plastic materials, including certification requirements, plastic composition, and production environments.

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a special engineering plastic with excellent properties such as high-temperature resistance, self-lubrication, ease of processing, and high mechanical strength. It can be widely used to manufacture various mechanical components, such as automotive gears, oil screens, shift starters, as well as aircraft engine components, automatic washing machine pulleys, and medical device components. Its performance characteristics include corrosion resistance, aging resistance, and solubility resistance, meeting the demands of high-temperature, high-frequency, and high-pressure electrical applications. PEEK materials combine toughness and rigidity, achieve precise dimensions, and are resistant to radiation, wear, and corrosion. They maintain excellent performance under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, are lightweight alternatives to metals for optical fiber components, and exhibit good wear resistance, antistatic properties, and electrical insulation. They are suitable for components requiring high mechanical strength and have low smoke and toxic gas emissions, making them environmentally friendly.

In non-medical fields, PEEK resins have been successfully applied to components such as separation claws in copiers, special heat-resistant bearings, chains, and gears, achieving lightweight, fatigue resistance, and oil-free lubrication. Similarly, PEEK materials hold promise for wide application in the transmission components of medical equipment.

On the other hand, PES, a special engineering plastic, although currently less commonly used, has gained wide recognition for its excellent heat resistance, physical and mechanical properties, and insulation characteristics. PES can be used continuously at high temperatures and maintains stable performance in environments with rapid temperature changes. It has good processing properties, allowing for extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, blow molding, vacuum forming, and foaming. In the medical device field, PES can withstand sterilization methods such as steam sterilization, dry heat sterilization, and V-ray sterilization, and can endure repeated sterilizations. Main products include contact lens disinfectors, dental drill handles, surgical containers, injection devices, and more.

PES materials are also widely used in applications where general resins cannot meet the requirements, due to their advantages such as high-temperature resistance, creep resistance, dimensional stability, oil resistance, and toughness. Developed products include various mechanical levers, handles, frames, X-ray observation mirrors, saws, engine and carburetor insulators, and more. The general properties of PES include high-temperature resistance, hydrolysis resistance, stable modulus-temperature relationship, creep resistance, good dimensional stability, impact resistance, non-toxicity, flame retardancy, and chemical resistance.

In high-temperature plastic injection molding, molds for high-temperature plastics require much higher temperatures compared to ordinary molds. Therefore, mold steel materials that can maintain mechanical properties at high temperatures, such as H13, S136, and 8407, should be selected. Injection molds can be heated using thermocouples or high-temperature oil. Additionally, high-temperature injection molding of materials requires injection molding machines equipped with high-temperature barrels and alloy screws and barrels made from special materials. During production, special attention should be paid to the safety of operators to prevent burns and other accidents.

In summary, the selection of medical-grade PEEK and PES plastics should be comprehensively considered based on the usage and working environments of medical devices, medical consumables, medical equipment, and medical accessories. During the mold design stage, requirements should be clearly defined, and suitable high-temperature plastics should be selected accordingly. In the high-temperature plastic injection molding stage, comprehensive considerations should be given to the injection characteristics, mold design, and injection molding processes of high-temperature plastics to ensure that manufacturability analysis is conducted before mold production and manufacturing.
